Masterclass ‘Breast cancer survivorship care’
Course number: 1805291

Program

Date
Monday, June 4, 2018

Topics

Topics that will be covered in this masterclass:

  • Understand the benefits of exercise as part of breast cancer rehabilitation.

  • Key considerations around exercise prescription and delivery across the cancer treatment trajectory (post-surgical, chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal therapy, post-treatment).
  • Understand the role of breast cancer rehabilitation in the healthcare landscape.
  • Research outcomes about which patients take part in exercise programs, why they take part (or why not), and what this may mean for exercise delivery.
  • Research findings explaining exercise behavior, intention and compliance to programs, in various cancer populations, and the translation of these findings to clinical practice, using cases.
  • Complex and changing survivor presentation; adjusting treatment approaches as necessary, using cases.
  • Exercise supervision / coaching beyond the exercise sessions in the PT practice; discussion about which other modes of exercise delivery and exercise motivation (including e-health) might be beneficial.

Learning outcome
The goal of this masterclass is to understand the theory and application of exercise for survivors of breast cancer during and following cancer treatment. The primary focus of the masterclass will be on practical aspects of screening, assessment, exercise prescription and delivery of care, with case studies integrated into the class.

Dutch International Neurorehabilitation Course, 5 days, given in your own country

Language during the course
English spoken

Based on the success of the Dutch “Neurorehabilitation-Stroke” course and on questions from (inter)national organizations a Dutch International Neurorehabilitation Course is developed, in line with the original course applied in the Netherlands, however condensed to 5 days.  This course can be given in your own country, by the so called Neuro Flying Dutch team.

This course contains theoretical lectures in the morning by Dutch top researchers in the field of stroke rehabilitation and neuroplasticity (Prof. dr. Gert. Kwakkel and Dr.Jaap H. Buurke) and practical exercise (case studies, clinical reasoning, training of practical skills and treatment of stroke-patients) in the afternoon, given by Dutch experienced physical therapists/teachers Neurorehabilitation ( Mrs.Jip F.Kamphuis, MSc and Hans Kerstens, MSc).

Description and Objectives
The course educates allied health professionals to become experts in stroke rehabilitation.
After the participant has followed the course he/she is able (to apply):

  • to search and critically appraise scientific papers;
  • principles of sensorimotor learning, stroke recovery and therapy-induced brain reorganization after stroke;
  • principles of clinical reasoning: diagnostics, evaluation, prognostics and selecting evidence based treatment goals;
  • state-of-the-art knowledge about evidence of current practice after stroke.

Neurorehabilitation- Stroke course for Dutch therapists, given in the Netherlands, 16 or 20 days.

Language during the course
Dutch spoken

Background
Due to the lack of evidence for specific neurologically oriented physical and occupational therapy approaches (e.g. Neuro-Developmental Treatment) and as a result of our improved understanding of underlying mechanisms of stroke recovery, a new eclectic approach course ('Neurorehabilitation-Stroke') was developed for allied health professionals in the Netherlands since 2006.

Goal
The course educates allied health professionals to become experts in stroke rehabilitation.
After the participant has followed the course he/she is:

  • able to search, read and understand scientific papers;
  • able to apply principles of clinical reasoning: diagnostics, prognostics, selecting goals for treatment, selecting evidence-based interventions to attain treatment goals, and evaluation of treatment;
  • able to apply state-of-the-art knowledge into daily practice of stroke rehabilitation.

The course is a unique combination of theoretical lectures and practical exercises (case studies, training of practical skills and treatment of stroke patients). The theoretical lectures are given by top academic researchers from different fields in stroke rehabilitation. The practical skills and clinical reasoning skills by experienced physical and occupational therapists-instructors.
In the Netherlands, the course for physical therapists lasts 20 days and for occupational therapists 16 days. Four days of the course consist of theoretical lectures, while the remaining days are spent on training practical skills and clinical reasoning.
Home assignments are a significant part of the course.

Content
The course Neurorehabilitation-Stroke is based on:

  • Current knowledge of neuroplasticity and (adaptive) motor learning
  • Knowledge of valid outcomes and determinants of functional recovery
  • Knowledge of underlying mechanisms of skill acquisition by restitution and compensation of body functions
  • Evidence-based guidelines and most recent trials and systematic reviews about treatment interventions

Course entry
Actually being involved in treating stroke patients is a prerequisite to participate in the course.
The course Neurorehabilitation-Stroke is organized by the Dutch Institute of Allied Health Care (www.npi.nl) and is accredited by the Dutch Society for Neurorehabilitation (www.neurorehab.nl)
