Deze scholing is geaccrediteerd voor: Basisregister Algemeen fysiotherapeut (Kwaliteitshuis - KRF en SKF) / Deelregister Manueel therapeut (NVMT) / Deelregister Sportfysiotherapeut (NVFS) met 16 punten.

Doel

Na deze masterclass is de deelnemer op de hoogte van de huidige inzichten omtrent de diagnostiek en behandeling van tendinopathieën in de onderste en bovenste extremiteit en kan op een adequate, evidence based wijze hulp bieden aan cliënten met een tendinopathie.

Beschrijving

Het NPi organiseert geregeld zgn. 'masterclasses'. Onder een masterclass verstaan we: een scholingsactiviteit, gegeven door (inter-)nationaal gerenommeerde experts, die qua inhoud vernieuwend is voor paramedici die zich in een bepaalde richting hebben gespecialiseerd, en waarvoor een duidelijk omschreven ingangsniveau geldt. Deze masterclass richt zich specifiek op fysiotherapeuten die een opleiding sportfysiotherapie of manuele therapie volgen of hebben afgerond.

This is an evidence-based course that is based on extensive clinical experience in the assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation of upper and lower limb tendon pathologies.

The course program consists of the following components:

Part 1 - Friday, March 24th 2023

• Tendinopathy: what are the features of tendon pain? Theory, biology and function of tendons - similarities and differences in upper and lower limb tendons;
• Who gets tendon pain? Clinical presentations;
• How does tendon pain develop? Common risk factors and important co-morbidities;
• The continuum of tendinopathy: exploring current models of tendinopathy to explain the different stages of this condition;
• Imaging: when to use? Ultrasound tissue characterisation and its use in tendons. The value of understanding tendon structure in managing tendon pain.

Part 2 - Saturday, March 25th 2023

• Subjective assessment of tendinopathy: what are the cues to look for when managing a patient with a suspected tendon problem? Important factors to understand in a patient’s load history and background;
• Understanding load in tendons / Differential diagnosis: Important characteristics of loading in tendons, including what are high and low load activities. What factors are important at distinguishing different diagnoses;
• Objective assessment of tendon pain – clinical pearls: What factors are important to measure and which risk factors to look out for? Clinical testing and the role of imaging. Upper and lower limb tendons.

Part 3 - Friday, April 14th 2023

• Objective assessment: practical case based learning of important factors to assess when treating a suspected tendon problem and kinetic chains assessment;
• Rehabilitation of tendon pain-acute management: how to settle pain, and use of isometrics? The importance of strength training in tendon rehab. End stage rehab and return to sport progressions for different upper and lower limb tendons.

Part 4 - Saturday, April 15th 2023

• Rehab: practical case based learning for managing tendinopathies. Special attention to exercise and strength training methods;
• What if it’s not working? Adjunct therapies? Expert advice on managing challenging cases. What factors to consider if not achieving outcomes? The role of adjunct therapies in tendinopathy;
• Opportunity for questions regarding course content and tendon pain presentations.

Leerdoelen

1. To develop a better understanding and knowledge of the structure and function of normal tendons and changes associated with tendinopathy.
2. To develop a comprehensive subjective and physical evaluation strategy and management protocols for the major upper and lower limb tendinopathies.
3. To develop greater understanding and knowledge of the role of imaging and injections in the assessment and management of tendinopathies.
4. To develop a comprehensive understanding of the physiological response to tendon loading and the evidence base for exercise.
5. To develop greater understanding of the relevance of nutrition on the impact of tendon health.
6. To develop greater understanding of other interventions that may be used in the management of tendinopathies including taping, surgery, manual therapy, electrotherapy and acupuncture.

Over de docenten

Jo Gibson MSc is a Clinical Physiotherapy Specialist at the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit based at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, UK. She is an expert in shoulder rehabilitation and lectures both nationally and internationally about this rapidly developing specialty. Her research interests are shoulder instability and motor learning. She is the co-author of the GOST booklet, a Guide for Orthopaedic Surgeons and Therapists regarding operative and postoperative management of Upper Limb Patients.

Ebonie Rio, PhD is a physiotherapist and research fellow at La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Ebonie completed her PhD looking at tendon pain, how the CNS and motor control might change in individuals with tendinopathy.
