About the speaker

Annemarie van der Wal, PhD, physiotherapist, orofacial physiotherapist

Annemarie van der Wal, PhD is an orofacial physiotherapist and manual therapist and obtained her PhD on tinnitus and temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) at the University of Antwerp. She currently works as an orofacial physiotherapist and post-doctoral researcher at the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam in the Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction department.She also works as a teacher at the Hogeschool Utrecht and in the master’s program.

Learning outcome

After participating in this webinar attendees will be able to:

• describe the relationship between temporomandibular dysfunction and tinnitus;
• identify the effect of an orofacial treatment in patients with TMD related somatic tinnitus;
• consider whether physiotherapy treatment can provide a possible improvement in tinnitus symptoms.

Description

During this webinar, the results of an orofacial treatment in patients with TMD related somatic tinnitus will be discussed, as researched in the thesis ‘Tinnitus and temporomandibular disorders. A study on the effectiveness of conservative temporomandibular treatment on tinnitus’. In addition, it will be discussed which patients are most likely to benefit from an orofacial treatment. The webinar will be concluded with a case study, to gain more insight into the treatment of a patient with TMD related somatic tinnitus.
