Prerequisites

This masterclass is only accessible to oncology physiotherapists, oncologically trained physiotherapists, edema physiotherapists, and orofacial physiotherapists.

Learning outcome

After this masterclass, the participant is aware of the latest developments in the field of medical oncological and physiotherapeutic treatment of patients with head and neck cancer, which are relevant for the practice of physiotherapists.

  • knows the most important risk factors for the development of head and neck cancer
  • understands the relationship between the main risk factors and head and neck cancer
  • knows the surgical options in patients with head and neck cancer
  • knows the radiotherapeutic options for patients with head and neck cancer
  • knows the treatment options for radiation damage after radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer
  • knows the chemo- and immunotherapeutic possibilities in patients with head and neck cancer
  • knows the influence of head and neck cancer and its treatment on physical and motor functioning
  • knows the influence of head and neck cancer and its treatment on the development of lymphedema.

Description

Oncology-, edema- and orofacial physiotherapists are increasingly confronted with patients treated for head and neck cancer. In this masterclass, new developments in the field of medical-oncological and physiotherapeutic treatment of these patients are highlighted, which are clinically relevant to them.

In this masterclass the following topics will be discussed:

  • Types of head and neck cancer, causation, epidemiology and impact on motor function
  • Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy for head and neck cancer
  • Treatment of radiation damage in head and neck cancer
  • Use of hyperbaric oxygen in head and neck cancer
  • Functional consequences of head and neck oncology and the possibilities of physiotherapy
  • Lymphedema in the head and neck region
