After this masterclass, the participant can describe the function and operation of the fascial system and name the signs and symptoms of dysfunctions in the fascial system. The participant can also indicate how the dysfunctions in the fascial system can be therapeutically influenced in clients with lymphedema and scars as a result of cancer treatment.
The fascia presents a complex fractal tissue structure which allows for the movement, lubrication, adaptation and repair. As an uninterrupted 3D collagen viscoelastic tissue fascia surrounds and connects every muscle and organ in the body. Inflammation, operation scars, hormonal changes and stress can have adverse effects on the fascial system - the body wide signalling network.
The purpose of the course is to introduce the function of the fascial system and the various signs and symptoms the dysfunction of it can cause.
The superficial fascia, which is located in the hypodermis is closely related with the lymphatic drainage, superficial nerves and vessels, exteroception and autonomic nervous system. The deep fascia consists of aponeurotic or epimysial-type of fascia and is more related to muscle function, movements, force transmission and proprioception. Therefore the signs and symptoms of superficial fascia dysfunction differ from those within the deep fascia.
Knowing the functioning of the fascial system guides the therapist to identify different kind of alterations by palpating the fascial layers and feeling the adaptability of them to movements and changes in sensitivity on the superficial and deep layers. By sensing the differences, the therapeutic fascial manipulation can be applied to normalize the functioning of this sensitive network.
The presenter of this masterclass is Tiina Lahtinen-Suopanki. She is an advanced specialist in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and has a Health Sciences Bachelor’s degree in exercise medicine. She is also a lymphedema therapist and has applied the knowledge of fascia and fascial manipulation in the management of treating edema and scarring. Tiina works as a senior consultant physiotherapist for a pain clinic and is a private practitioner in the orthopaedic and rehabilitation hospital Orton Oy, Helsinki, Finland. She has taught continuing education courses for physical therapists in Manual Therapy and Therapeutic Exercises since 1987 and became an authorized teacher of Fascial Manipulation® in 2014.
