Description

‘HIIT’ group training in patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer: Practical applications with participants from “Body and Cancer”.

A form of interval training, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), is a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. Though there is no universal HIIT session duration, these workouts typically last under 30 minutes, with times varying based on a participant's current fitness level. Especially the short duration of session time has shown to be beneficial for patients with cancer.

“Body and Cancer” is a six-week, nine-hour weekly, group based, multimodal exercise program comprised of both low- and high-intensity components, including HITT delivered aerobic exercise. Since 2007, this program has been offered as an adjunct to chemotherapy in the Copenhagen area, and is today offered at eight hospitals throughout Denmark. To date, over 1800 participants representing over 21 diagnoses (both early and late stages) have participated in the Copenhagen area alone.

This practical course will provide an opportunity for a hands-on experience with participants from “Body and Cancer” including pre-exercise screening as well as consideration regarding the applicability and delivery of HITT. Course participants will be expected to participate in HIIT training.
