Deze masterclass is alleen toegankelijk voor oncologiefysiotherapeuten en oncologisch geschoolde fysiotherapeuten.

Doel

The goal of this masterclass is to teach the principles and application of incorporating a ‘movement preparation’ phase into the delivery of a functional resistance training program for people with cancer. Movement preparation can address mobility and movement limitations in order to maximize success of the patient in performing functional resistance training to improve physical functioning.

Subdoelen

  • Introduce the need for and principals of ‘movement preparation’.
  • Understand the concept of ‘movement preparation’ and rationale for its inclusion in implementing evidence-based programs using functional resistance training.
  • Provide a framework for incorporating ‘movement preparation’ into a functional resistance training program for cancer patients.
  • Know the benefits of resistance training for cancer survivors.
  • Know the evidence base behind functional resistance training for cancer survivors and awareness of practical limitations.
  • Distinguish the types of resistance training modalities and their relative advantages and disadvantages for cancer survivors.
  • Teach attendees the ‘movement preparation’ exercises used in a functional resistance training program.
  • Share best practices for delivering movement preparation and functional resistance training using video conference technology.

Beschrijving

De beschrijving van de cursusinhoud is hieronder in het Engels weergegeven, aangezien deze masterclass in het Engels wordt gegeven.

At the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) we have developed a functional resistance training program that improves physical functioning in cancer patients. We believe this functionally based training program is superior to machine-based training at restoring physical functioning and participation in work and life roles. However, instruction of functional training is more challenging than machine-based training because patients often present with reduced mobility as a result of weakness, limited range of motion, sarcopenic obesity, treatment-related toxicities, and pre-existing orthopedic issues. These mobility limitations can impede the instruction of functional movements because patients cannot maintain proper posture or perform dynamic movements correctly.

We have changed our research exercise programs to incorporate a phase of ‘movement preparation’ in the first 4-6 weeks of our functional resistance training program. Movement preparation involves teaching participants specific exercises that strengthen their hips, core, and key stabilizing muscles that play a major role for proper movement patterns that must be in place in order to properly perform more difficult compound exercises such as squats, lunges, step up, etc.

This masterclass will introduce the principles of ‘movement preparation’ for attendees, walk them through the ‘movement preparation’ exercises used in our functional training program, and provide a framework for incorporating ‘movement preparation’ into a functional training program for cancer patients.

Over de sprekers

Kimi Daniel is a Senior Research Assistant at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), School of Nursing. She received a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine - Athletic Training from Florida International University. She participated as exercise specialist in several exercise trials for cancer survivors, while also instructing exercise classes for cancer survivors outside of the research setting. As an advocate of exercise as medicine she trains clients with a range of acute and chronic health conditions, to improve their mobility, physical function and general health and wellbeing.

Dr. Kerri Winters-Stone is exercise physiologist and professor at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), School of Nursing and is co-director of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute’s Community Partnership Program and co-leader of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program. Her expertise and research focus centers on the use of physical activity to prevent and manage chronic disease. Her studies have shown that cancer survivors can benefit from exercise that reverses treatment-related side effects and symptoms. The goal of her work is to develop safe, targeted and effective exercise programs that translate well to community settings and clinical practice so that people can make positive lifestyle choices for better long-term health.
